When to give gerberas
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
We suggest gerberas for birthdays, thank-you gifts or Mother’s Day when you want to highlight the recipient’s favourite colour. First choose between cut flowers and a potted plant, then agree size and delivery. There is no compulsory flower count or colour: the format should be convenient for the person receiving it.

Botanical reference: Gerbera
A visible centre and distinct colours
Gerberas have daisy-like flowers with a clear centre and a wide range of colours. In an arrangement, you can let each flower head stand out or combine it with smaller elements. Explain whether you prefer contrasting shades or a uniform bouquet; our coral illustration is just one example.
Consider the scale of the gift
For a small gesture, ask for a composition that leaves the flowers visible without taking up too much space. For a larger bouquet, agree on its finished size and delivery format. Available shapes and colours depend on the variety and the florist’s supply, so confirm both before ordering.
Cut gerberas or a potted plant?
The RHS describes both uses, but care and commitment differ. For someone wanting a temporary floral gesture, we suggest cut stems. If they enjoy growing plants, ask about a potted specimen, its position and care: a colourful gift should not become an unwanted responsibility.
Ordering a small bouquet that feels complete
Describe where it will be displayed and the approximate size you need, rather than focusing only on flower count. Our suggestion is to leave the flower heads visible and choose one or two shades for a simple look. When comparing quotes, check whether foliage, wrapping, a vase and delivery are included.
A handover planned around the recipient
When taking gerberas to a meal or workplace, check who can receive them and whether a container is available. Ask the florist to prepare the bouquet for the planned journey and keep it out from under luggage. For arrival at home, include the bouquet instructions and our care guide.

Which flowers to give for a birthday
For a birthday, start with the recipient’s favourite flower or colour. If you do not know it, we suggest dahlias for volume, gerberas for a focus on colour, anemones for contrast or tulips for a simple outline. These are editorial alternatives; there is no required flower for a particular age or birth month.

Giving flowers for a new baby: what to consider
For a birth, first ask whether the family wants flowers and where they would like to receive them. Do not send a bouquet to hospital without checking the rules: some centres, including Hospital Clínic Barcelona, do not allow flowers or plants in rooms and care units. If welcome, an agreed delivery after the family returns home may be more practical.

How to care for a bouquet when it arrives
To care for a bouquet, use a clean vase, keep leaves out of the water and follow the flower-food instructions. Check the water and keep flowers away from heat. Before dismantling the gift, identify its format: loose stems, an arrangement built on a support and a potted plant need different handling.

How to transport a bouquet as a gift
To transport a bouquet, tell the florist the journey length, transport method and who will receive it. Request preparation suited to that route and prevent the arrangement from moving or being crushed. A paper-wrapped bouquet and an arrangement in a container need different solutions.

Which flowers to give for graduation
For graduation, we suggest a manageable bouquet featuring the recipient’s favourite flower or colour. Gerberas, carnations or lisianthus are starting points to discuss with a florist. Decide when the gift will be received and how it will travel home: a large bouquet may be awkward alongside a diploma, photographs and later celebrations.

Which flowers to give for retirement
For retirement, choose flowers that recognise the person and what you have shared. A bouquet can accompany a farewell; a plant suits someone who wants to care for it and has an appropriate space. We suggest alstroemerias, gerberas or carnations according to taste, without prescribing meanings or linking retirement to a particular age.

What to write in a card with flowers
Say why you are sending the flowers, add a detail that belongs to your relationship and sign your name. You do not need a solemn quotation or an explanation of every flower’s meaning. The examples in this guide are original Agenda Floral messages: adapt them to your relationship without attributing them to writers or treating them as a universal formula.
Frequently asked questions
Which gerbera should I choose for my mother?
Start with her favourite colour and a bouquet size she will find practical. Our suggestion does not assign any compulsory flower colour to Mother’s Day or to mothers in general.
Are gerberas only gifts for mothers?
No. Birthdays, graduations and thank-you gestures are equally valid personal suggestions when the recipient likes them.
How many gerberas must a bouquet contain?
There is no compulsory number. Agree the finished size, display location and budget; bouquets with the same stem count can be arranged differently.
Can I give a potted gerbera for a terrace?
Check the variety and terrace conditions with the nursery. The RHS distinguishes tender gerberas from hardier types; they are not all suitable for every location.

How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
