Cologne Strüßjer: Rosenmontag bouquets and the date

Cologne · Local

Strüßjer are small flower bouquets handed out at Cologne carnival. You do not need to order one to watch the parade. For a personal gift to someone you are celebrating with, I would choose a small carnation or gerbera bouquet. Rosenmontag falls on 8 February in 2027.

What Strüßjer are and when Rosenmontag falls

Participants in the Rosenmontag parade hand out small bouquets known as Strüßjer. Watching the parade and preparing your own gift are different plans. This entry explains the custom and helps you choose a format if you want to give flowers yourself.

Rosenmontag falls 48 days before Easter Sunday. In 2027 it is on 8 February and in 2028 on 28 February. This calendar occasion applies to Cologne and appears in the North Rhine-Westphalia filter. It does not set the programme for other cities.

Choosing a personal flower gift

For meeting someone before going out, I would choose a few carnations with some greenery and simple wrapping that leaves room to hold the stems. Gerberas are another option if you prefer more open flowers. These are gift suggestions rather than a recipe for the bouquets distributed by the parade.

The image shows a carnation from the catalogue, not a complete Strüßje. When ordering, explain whether the recipient will carry it on the outing or can leave it at home. If you will be out for many hours, give it afterwards so it does not need to come along for the entire route.

Preparing bouquets for a participating group

Agree the quantity, size and reception point with your group’s coordinator before ordering. Flowers for distribution during the parade need different preparation from a single gift bouquet. Do not infer quantities or handover points from another year’s programme.

You could write: “Our group needs small bouquets for Rosenmontag. We want to agree the quantity and a format we can handle during the route. Where will the order be received and when must it be ready?” That gives you the information needed to finalise the order with the florist.

The calendar date and each year’s programme

The calendar records Rosenmontag as an all-day occasion. Consult the programme for the relevant year for the route, times and participation arrangements. The calculated day does not guarantee that the parade will always keep the same format.

This occasion’s subscription publishes dates from 2026 to 2046. If you are taking your own bouquet, also consult the transport guide and the German seasonal-flower guide. They help you prepare the journey and discuss what material the florist can supply.

Flowers for an indoor carnival session

If you are going to a Karnevalssitzung, follow the date on your ticket. These sessions have their own programme. For example, the Große Kölner Kostümsitzung at the Gürzenich is announced for 7 February 2027, the day before Rosenmontag.

For someone you are going to the session with, I would choose a small bouquet that can stay at home. Give it before you leave and put it in water. That saves them having to find room beside their seat or carry it throughout the show.

The Gürzenich and Flora do not allow containers made from fragile or splintering materials. If your gift includes a glass vase, give it at home or outside the venue after the session. For flowers to be handed over inside, agree the format and reception point with the organiser. A small bouquet alone does not guarantee admission.
