Mother’s Day in the UK: Mothering Sunday and flowers

United Kingdom · Nationwide

In the UK Mother’s Day, also called Mothering Sunday, is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter. For a personal gift, we suggest tulips in her favourite colour. Choose the size around where she will display them and give her the bouquet when you visit.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar

Apple or Google decide when to check for updates. We cannot guarantee that changes appear immediately. Importing the file gives you a copy that does not receive our future corrections. Importing again may duplicate events. We do not add alarms, although your calendar may apply its own alerts.

A date that changes with Easter

Mothering Sunday has no fixed day of the month. To wish your mother a happy Mother’s Day in the UK, find that year’s British date rather than using another country’s celebration.

If you are attending a service, check that church’s programme to plan your visit. To contribute flowers to the service, arrange the format and reception with its organisers. Arrange that contribution separately from your mother’s personal gift.

Tulips and alternatives chosen for their appearance

Tulips are our suggestion for their cup-shaped flowers. Compare lisianthus for its satin-like petals or gerberas for their open flowers and distinct centres. Choose colours she enjoys.

For home, size the bouquet to fit the vase she will use. If the gift includes a container, count its height and width when deciding the size. A photo of the space and its measurements help explain the order.

A bouquet for a visit after lunch

You could order: “I would like tulips for my mum for Mothering Sunday. We are having lunch out and going to her home afterwards. I would prefer to collect the bouquet for that visit and bring it with a vase that fits on her shelf.” Add the measurements and the specific date.

The card could say: “Mum, happy Mother’s Day. These flowers are for the conversations that always carry on after lunch. With love, Alex.” Adapt it to your gathering. If you send the gift, agree on a time when she will be at home.

Frequently asked questions

Are Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday two different dates?

In the UK they are two names for this celebration. The British date is the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter.

What should I put on the order if I am arranging it from another country?

Write the full date including the year, the delivery town and a time window in the destination’s local time. Add who will receive the bouquet so a home delivery is not confused with a contribution to a church.
