When to give tulips
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
Give tulips for a birthday, anniversary or Valentine’s Day when the recipient likes their shape. For enjoyment that day, choose a bouquet; bulbs are a growing project. Confirm availability and opening stage for the handover date. Our Valentine’s Day association is editorial, with no compulsory meaning attached to colours.

Botanical reference: Tulipa
Shape matters as much as colour
The cup-shaped flower is particularly recognisable, but tulips also come in double, fringed and other forms. Choose one variety for a simple bouquet or combine colours for a more expressive arrangement. Tell your florist whether you want the clean outline shown here or a fuller, more open flower.
Availability on the day of your gift
Garden tulips are associated with spring flowering, but that is not a supply calendar for Spanish florists. Ask which varieties will be available on your chosen date. If your preferred tulip is unavailable, keep the recipient’s favourite colour in mind when selecting an alternative flower.
Bouquet, pot or bulbs to plant?
These are three different gifts. A bouquet provides flowers for a vase; a pot contains a living plant needing care; bulbs offer a growing project, not ready-open flowers for the celebration. Specify the format when ordering and reserve bulbs for someone who wants to plant them.
Should you buy closed or open flowers?
The RHS advises harvesting garden tulips when buds show colour, before they open fully. For a purchased gift, ask how the bouquet will look at handover. We cannot promise an opening time: agree with the florist whether the priority is an immediate display or watching the flowers develop at home.
Tulips or roses for an anniversary
Our advice is to choose tulips when the recipient prefers their shape, and roses when you know those are their favourites. To compare quotes, ask for the finished size, presentation and delivery charge: stem count alone does not describe a bouquet. Include a card explaining the anniversary instead of relying on a supposed colour meaning.
When we suggest it in Spain
Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.

Valentine’s Day
An alternative for someone who prefers a simpler bouquet.

Father’s Day
For a simple-shaped bouquet in his favourite colours.

International Women’s Day
Main flower in our selectionOur suggestion for a gift chosen around her taste, not an official flower of 8 March.

Which flowers to give for a birthday
For a birthday, start with the recipient’s favourite flower or colour. If you do not know it, we suggest dahlias for volume, gerberas for a focus on colour, anemones for contrast or tulips for a simple outline. These are editorial alternatives; there is no required flower for a particular age or birth month.

Giving flowers for a new baby: what to consider
For a birth, first ask whether the family wants flowers and where they would like to receive them. Do not send a bouquet to hospital without checking the rules: some centres, including Hospital Clínic Barcelona, do not allow flowers or plants in rooms and care units. If welcome, an agreed delivery after the family returns home may be more practical.

Should you give a bouquet or a potted plant?
Choose a bouquet when someone wants a temporary arrangement, and a plant when they want to care for it and have a suitable place. This is editorial guidance, not a measure of how much the gift matters. The most useful decision starts by asking what the recipient would like.

Seasonal flowers in Spain: how to choose
To choose seasonal flowers in Spain, ask what is being produced in the place of origin and what the florist can supply on the gift date. Natural flowering, commercial cultivation and availability are different things. No single monthly calendar describes every region, variety and shop; a garden reference offers context but cannot confirm stock.
Frequently asked questions
Which tulip colour should I give?
Start with their favourite colour or a combination that recalls a shared experience. We do not assign a universal message or compulsory occasion to each flower colour.
Are bulbs equivalent to a bouquet?
No. Bulbs require planting and waiting. For flowers to enjoy that day, specify a bouquet or an already flowering plant.
Can I reserve tulips outside spring?
Check actual supply for your town and date. Garden flowering neither guarantees nor rules out florist availability; agree a substitution before paying.
Can tulips suit a graduation?
Yes, as a personal suggestion when the graduate likes them. Ask whether a vase will be available or the flowers must be carried for hours, and plan the handover accordingly.

How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
