Which flowers to give for Valentine’s Day in Germany
Germany · Nationwide
Valentine’s Day in Germany is on 14 February. I would choose roses if you know they like them or tulips if they prefer another kind of bouquet. Before ordering decide where they will receive it. A gift for home can differ from one they need to carry during an outing.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar
Apple or Google decide when to check for updates. We cannot guarantee that changes appear immediately. Importing the file gives you a copy that does not receive our future corrections. Importing again may duplicate events. We do not add alarms, although your calendar may apply its own alerts.
Valentinstag and choosing flowers
The Fachverband Deutscher Floristen includes roses and tulips in its Valentine’s suggestions. This documents a floral connection within the German trade. It does not mean your partner must prefer red roses or that one size works for everyone.
Start with a flower or colour you remember them liking. If you are unsure ask about a simple bouquet they can easily display. The anniversary flowers guide helps you think about the gesture before choosing an arrangement.
For home or an evening out
For dinner out you could give the bouquet before leaving. They can put it in water without looking for somewhere to keep it at the restaurant. If you will give it during the date choose a small format and tell the florist how long it will be out of water.
For home delivery confirm the recipient’s name and an agreed time window. Do not assume a neighbour or building staff will accept flowers unless you have checked.
How to order from another country
The German occasion stays on 14 February even if you read the guide in English. Find a florist working at the destination and confirm the full address. The calendar does not tell you what flowers they have or when they can deliver.
You could ask “I would like tulips in a soft colour for a home delivery on 14 February. What can you prepare and when can the recipient receive them?”. If that flower is unavailable agree on an alternative with a similar look before approving the change.
From the journey to the vase
Arrange a direct handover and prepare a clean container. The RHS recommends keeping cut flowers away from heat sources. A table beside a radiator may be convenient for seeing the bouquet but is not a good place to keep it.
Follow the instructions supplied with the flowers. If they have transport wrapping ask how to remove it and prepare the stems on arrival.
A card to go with the gift
Write something that reflects your relationship without relying on a supposed universal flower meaning. You could write “I wanted you to have flowers at home today. We’ll celebrate together this evening”. Adapt it to what you actually want to say.
Which flowers to choose
We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.
Frequently asked questions
Does Valentine’s Day change date in Germany?
This occasion uses 14 February each year. The website language does not change the date or the calendar’s country.
Do the flowers have to be red roses?
No. The FDF also suggests tulips. The recipient’s preference gives you a more useful starting point than repeating an arrangement out of habit.
Can I send the bouquet to the restaurant?
Check with the venue and agree who will receive it. To avoid carrying flowers during dinner you could give them at home before going out.
Does the guide guarantee delivery on 14 February?
No. The florist confirms availability and delivery terms. Agree a time window before ordering.
Sources and what they support
- Fachverband Deutscher Floristen · Valentinstag
The German florists’ association connects Valentine’s Day with 14 February and documents rose and tulip suggestions. Its 2026 campaign does not establish stock, prices or everyone’s preferences.
- Royal Horticultural Society · Cut-flower care
Recommends preparing the container and stems and keeping cut flowers away from heat sources. Does not establish vase-life promises or a florist’s delivery terms.
How we put these guides together
We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
