When Mother’s Day is in Germany and which flowers to give

Germany · Nationwide

Mother’s Day in Germany is on the second Sunday in May. Choose flowers around her taste and where she will put them. Compare a chrysanthemum bouquet with gerberas. Before ordering from abroad check the German date and agree how she will receive it that Sunday.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar

Apple or Google decide when to check for updates. We cannot guarantee that changes appear immediately. Importing the file gives you a copy that does not receive our future corrections. Importing again may duplicate events. We do not add alarms, although your calendar may apply its own alerts.

Muttertag has its own date

UN Women Deutschland documents the second Sunday in May. This differs from Spain’s first Sunday in May and Argentina’s third Sunday in October. Changing this guide’s language keeps the German rule.

If you follow several countries keep their subscriptions separate. You will not have to work out the destination from the event’s name. Upcoming dates in this guide are for Germany.

Choose a bouquet with room at home

The FDF suggests chrysanthemums for Muttertag in its 2026 campaign. This is a documented floral reference you can adapt. It does not require that species or show that every mother prefers the same arrangement.

For a small table ask for a proportionate bouquet and check whether it can arrive with a container. If she enjoys arranging flowers give stems for a vase she already has. Gerberas offer another shape to compare without changing the purpose of the gift.

Arrange the Sunday handover

Speak to the destination florist before relying on Sunday delivery. Confirm whether they offer it and whether your mother will be at home. The calendar does not establish opening hours or delivery services.

If Sunday does not work agree an earlier handover and save a call or visit for the day itself. Avoid promising a surprise that leaves someone waiting at home without knowing why.

Ordering from Spain or Argentina

State that the gift is for Muttertag in Germany and write the full date. You could ask “This is for my mother in Germany. She likes small-flowered chrysanthemums and has a low vase. What can you prepare and when could she receive it?”.

Agree what can change if a flower is unavailable. Keeping a colour or size she likes may be more useful than insisting on a species the florist cannot obtain. The delivery guide helps you check the address and recipient.

A gesture that does not add work

UN Women Deutschland calls for recognising mothers beyond gifts. To accompany flowers with time together suggest something specific she would enjoy. Do not assume organising another meal is what she needs.

You could write “I chose these flowers thinking of that corner of your home you love. I would like to spend some time with you this Sunday”. Change the wording if you will be apart or the date is difficult for her.

Which flowers to choose

We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.

Frequently asked questions

Does German Mother’s Day coincide with Spain’s?

The rule differs. Germany uses the second Sunday in May and Spain the first. Argentina celebrates on the third Sunday in October.

Are chrysanthemums required for Muttertag?

No. The FDF includes them in a 2026 suggestion. Compare that option with her taste and choose other flowers if you prefer.

Can I be sure of Sunday delivery?

Only the florist can confirm that service. Agree the date and handover before ordering.

Does the English version use another date?

No. This guide and its Spanish and English events are for Germany and keep the second Sunday in May.

Sources and what they support

  • UN Women Deutschland · Muttertag

The German committee documents the second Sunday in May and calls for recognition of mothers beyond gifts. It does not establish shop hours or delivery services.

  • Fachverband Deutscher Floristen · Muttertag 2026

Documents a German floral suggestion with chrysanthemums for Mother’s Day on 10 May 2026. That arrangement is the association’s recommendation rather than a required flower or a programme for another year.

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
