Why the date of Vatertag changes
Vatertag shares its date with Christi Himmelfahrt. Count 39 days from Easter Sunday in the Gregorian calendar to find it. Repeating a date in May or choosing the same numbered Thursday each month will not work.
Do not use Spain’s 19 March or Argentina’s nationwide date to plan a gift in Germany. The country determines the occasion even when you read the guide in Spanish or English. You can compare the other Father’s Day guides below.
Flowers I would choose for him
Start with a colour or flower you know he likes. If he usually chooses blue tones ask about irises. If he prefers an open flower in another colour discuss gerberas with the florist. The sources for this guide do not establish a required Vatertag flower.
A small bouquet may be easier to display on a table or shelf with little space. Tell the florist where it will go and ask for an arrangement that fits. Check what flowers they can prepare before settling on the gift.
If you will spend the day out
Give the flowers when he can leave them at home. If you will be out for several hours you could give them on your return or agree on another moment. He will not need to carry the bouquet during the outing.
For a meal at home ask about flowers that already come in a suitable container. Put them where they will not get in the way of serving and let him choose where to display them later. The RHS recommends a cool spot away from radiators and other heat sources.

A card that sounds like you
Write a sentence that fits your relationship. For example “I wanted you to have flowers at home today. Thank you for being there when I need you”. You do not need to give irises a universal meaning to make the gift personal.

Is German Father’s Day always in May?
No. The Easter rule can place it between 30 April and 3 June. It is always a Thursday. Check the upcoming date before arranging delivery.
Is a particular flower traditionally given for Vatertag?
The sources for this guide do not establish a traditional or required flower. Irises and gerberas are our suggestions based on his taste. Choose another flower or a different gift if a bouquet would not be welcome.
Can I celebrate my home country’s Father’s Day while in Germany?
Yes. You can agree on a family celebration on another date. This calendar follows the German occasion and does not change the date for individual families.
How far ahead does the Vatertag subscription go?
