Flowers to say thank you on World Teachers’ Day
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
Spain · Nationwide
World Teachers’ Day is on 5 October, according to UNESCO. If you want to thank a teacher with flowers, consider a small bouquet of gerberas, carnations or alstroemerias. First check that the school allows gifts and that the recipient would welcome one. Flowers are our suggestion, not a tradition required by UNESCO.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar
Apple or Google decide when to fetch updates; changes are not immediate. Importing the file creates a copy that does not receive our future corrections, and importing again may duplicate events. We include no alarms; your calendar may apply its own alerts.
What 5 October marks
UNESCO dedicates this day to teachers and the conditions they need to do their work. We include it in Spain’s calendar because it is an international observance. The national label does not mean it is a public holiday or that every school celebrates it in the same way.
This entry covers the worldwide observance on 5 October. It does not apply that date to the end of term, graduations or other school celebrations, which depend on the school and its calendar.
Ask the school before buying
Check whether gifts are allowed and how they should be received. A well-intended gift may still be unsuitable for the school’s rules or the recipient’s circumstances. If gifts are not accepted, a thank-you note can express what you wanted to say without adding an object.
If several families are organising it, suggest voluntary participation and a clear budget. Choose one person to coordinate the order and sign the card in a way that puts no pressure on anyone to contribute.
Which flowers and format to choose
Our suggestion is a small bouquet that is easy to take home. Choose gerberas to highlight a colour, carnations if you enjoy ruffled petals or alstroemerias for smaller flowers. Check availability and agree the size before ordering.
If you do not know whether they enjoy fragrant flowers, ask rather than assume. Do not assume they want to care for a plant in the classroom either: a pot needs a suitable position and someone who wants to look after it.
What to write and when to give it
Choose a specific reason to say thank you: an explanation that helped, a patient moment or something you now do with more confidence. An original example is: “Thank you for explaining it a different way when I needed it.” Adapt it to sound like you.
Agree a time that will not interrupt a lesson and confirm where to leave the bouquet. For delivery, identify the recipient and the group giving it. Do not assume the school reception accepts parcels or can keep flowers all day.
Which flowers to choose
Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.
Frequently asked questions
When is World Teachers’ Day?
UNESCO marks it on 5 October each year. This entry covers that international observance.
Can I give a teacher flowers?
It depends on the school’s rules and the person’s preferences. Ask before buying; we do not assume gifts are allowed at every school.
What is a suitable budget?
We do not prescribe an amount. Choose something you can afford and, for a group gift, agree a voluntary contribution without pressuring other families.
Is a bouquet or a plant better?
A small bouquet may be easier to carry. Give a plant only if you know they want to care for it and have a suitable position; do not assume the classroom needs one.

UNESCO places the worldwide observance on 5 October each year and explains its connection to recognition and conditions in the teaching profession. It does not recommend gifts.
How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
