Which flowers to give for a promotion or a new job

To congratulate someone on a promotion or new job I would choose a small bouquet in a colour they like. You could compare gerberas and alstroemerias and request a container if they would welcome flowers. Before sending them to work ask whether they would enjoy that gesture and have already shared the news. For a first job celebrating at home after work may be easier than receiving a bouquet while meeting the team.

Colour and shape vary between cultivars. Use it as a visual reference rather than to identify a plant.

Congratulate them without sharing the news first

Telling you about a promotion does not mean they want to announce it through an office delivery. Ask whether they would prefer flowers at home or during a celebration with people close to them. You can keep the bouquet choice a surprise while agreeing on the time and place.

If the gift comes from a working relationship first check whether they can accept it and how they want to receive it. You do not need to give your team leader a gift to congratulate them. A personal message can mark the news without adding an obligation.

Gerberas or alstroemerias for the appearance they enjoy

You could suggest gerberas if you want their flower shape to stand out. NC State describes flower heads with a centre surrounded by ray flowers. Ask to see the colour and size of those intended for your bouquet rather than choosing from a photo of another order.

Alstroemerias are another option if they like petals with flecks or streaks of colour. NC State documents that range of appearance and the use of tall selections as cut flowers. These are two suggestions to compare rather than flowers with a compulsory meaning of success. Choose around their taste and confirm what can be prepared for that day.

First day, home or office: agree where to receive the bouquet

For a first job ask what happens after work that day. If they have a long journey or several errands you could give flowers during dinner at home or at another time. Avoid adding something they have to carry between introductory meetings.

If they would like flowers at work confirm who will meet the courier and what happens if they are unavailable. Agree on measurements including the container and wrapping. A bouquet with a vase is easier to put in place but still needs care. Iowa State recommends checking the water daily and keeping flowers away from heat.

When several colleagues are giving the gift

Agree on who wants to take part and a comfortable budget. A contribution need not be a compulsory fee or a way to show greater closeness. Before buying check that the recipient would welcome the gift and decide who will sign the card. Anyone wanting to write separately can do so without increasing the bouquet size.

An order example and two cards

You could order along these lines: “I would like a compact gerbera bouquet to congratulate a friend on her new job. She likes orange and will receive it at home after work. I would like a vase included and to agree on the total price with delivery. If that colour is unavailable please show me another proposal before making it.” Adapt the colour and format to the person.

For a first job you could write “Congratulations on your new job. I am happy to celebrate this beginning with you. Anna.” For a promotion you might choose “Congratulations on the promotion. It is lovely to celebrate this news with you. Mark.” These are examples to adapt and do not need to mention salary or job terms.

If you also want to thank someone who helped during the job search you can send a separate message. Congratulating an achievement and thanking someone for help are different reasons. The thank-you guide develops the second without needing to put everything on the same card.

Which flowers to choose

We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.

Frequently asked questions

Do the flowers need to arrive on the first day?

They do not. Agree on a time they can enjoy without managing a bouquet delivery during induction. A visit or dinner afterwards may suit them if they want to celebrate with you.

What changes if they work from home?

Ask where the flowers would go and whether they want a bouquet or a plant. Do not assume their desk has space or that they want a pot to look after. You can choose a gift for the home without making it a work accessory.

What can I write if they have not announced the new role?

First agree on whether they want flowers. You can congratulate the beginning without naming the employer or including details they do not want shared. If they prefer privacy wait or congratulate them another way.

Sources and what they support

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
