When to give a phalaenopsis orchid
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
Give a phalaenopsis for an anniversary, a thank-you or a new home if the recipient wants a plant to care for and has a suitable bright position. Check space for the pot and flowering stems, and include watering instructions for that specimen. If they prefer a temporary gesture, we suggest a bouquet: a potted orchid requires ongoing care.

Botanical reference: Phalaenopsis
Choosing a potted plant
Phalaenopsis are epiphytic orchids; their hybrids are commonly cultivated in containers with a growing medium suited to their roots. A potted plant needs different instructions from a bouquet. Ask for guidance for the particular specimen, including how to assess when it needs water. A decorative outer pot should not distract from the growing container and its drainage.
Allow space for the whole gift
Check the height and spread of the flowering stems as well as the pot diameter. A compact plant may fit a low shelf better than several long stems. Our picture illustrates a white form; confirm the available colour and whether artificial colouring has been applied. A personal note can explain the occasion without relying on a supposed language of colours.
Where to place a gifted phalaenopsis
The American Orchid Society recommends a bright position with little or no direct sun. Before choosing one for a new home, ask about available space; a corner chosen only for its appearance may not suit it. If the recipient lacks a suitable position or does not want a plant to care for, we suggest a bouquet.
Does it need watering once a week?
There is no single schedule. The American Orchid Society advises watering thoroughly and repeating when the medium is nearly dry, avoiding water collecting in the crown. Ask to be shown how to assess the particular plant’s growing medium and pass those instructions on with it.
What to include besides the plant
Our suggestion is to include its name, the nursery’s care instructions and a decorative container compatible with the growing pot. Check how to empty surplus water without dismantling the gift. For a personal handover, arrange protection and a stable base that accommodate the flowering stems; do not carry it flat under other packages.
When we suggest it in Spain
Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.

Mother’s Day
A suggested potted plant for someone who wants to care for it; check space and preferences first. It is not a compulsory tradition for this date.

Which flowers to give for an anniversary
For an anniversary, give roses if they belong to your shared story, or choose a different flower the other person enjoys more. We suggest ranunculus for layered petals, calla lilies for simple lines and proteas for an unusual shape. We assign no compulsory species to each relationship year: a shared memory is the starting point.

Should you give a bouquet or a potted plant?
Choose a bouquet when someone wants a temporary arrangement, and a plant when they want to care for it and have a suitable place. This is editorial guidance, not a measure of how much the gift matters. The most useful decision starts by asking what the recipient would like.

Which flowers to give for retirement
For retirement, choose flowers that recognise the person and what you have shared. A bouquet can accompany a farewell; a plant suits someone who wants to care for it and has an appropriate space. We suggest alstroemerias, gerberas or carnations according to taste, without prescribing meanings or linking retirement to a particular age.

Flowers for a new home or business opening
For a new home or business opening, we suggest a gift that can be placed and cared for comfortably in that particular space. If you do not know the lighting or willingness to care for plants, discuss a bouquet in a container. If you do, compare suitable flowering plants. Confirm a receiving time: moving day is not always the most convenient choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same orchid as cymbidium?
No. They are different genera in our catalogue. For a bouquet, specifically ask about cut orchids; when choosing a potted phalaenopsis, include its care instructions with the gift.
Is it a good choice for someone who travels often?
First ask whether they want a plant and how they will manage its care. If that creates a burden, a bouquet delivered on their return may be more convenient.
Can I give a fixed watering interval as instructions?
It is better to include guidance on assessing the growing medium. Needs change with the environment and container, so a fixed day does not suit every home.
Should I buy the plant with the most spikes?
Not necessarily. Available space, the plant’s condition and the recipient’s taste matter more than choosing by spike count.

How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
