When to give flowers and how to choose them
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
Give flowers for a celebration, to thank someone or simply because you know they enjoy them. You do not need to wait for a special date. Start with the recipient’s preferences and where they will receive the bouquet, then use the calendar and individual flower guides for direction rather than as a list of obligations.

Which dates the Spanish calendar includes
Our selection covers Valentine’s Day on 14 February; Sant Jordi on 23 April in Catalonia; Spanish Mother’s Day on the first Sunday in May; and All Saints’ Day on 1 November. Their contexts differ: a romantic gesture, books and roses, family appreciation or remembrance. Each occasion page explains its geographical scope and provides the sources supporting its date and customs.
Moving from an occasion to a flower
Start with a favourite flower, a colour the person enjoys or an appearance that suits their taste. Densely petalled arrangements, simple flower outlines and blooms with visible centres create different effects. Our guides help compare those features and find alternatives. Birthdays, anniversaries and thank-you gestures are personal contexts we suggest; they are not additional public celebrations in the editorial calendar.
What to confirm before ordering
Decide on the size, where the bouquet will go and how it will be transported. Ask your florist about the particular variety’s availability; an illustrative image guarantees neither stock nor an exact appearance. If animals live in the home, check the flowers’ suitability before giving them. We separate sources about dates and botany from our composition recommendations, allowing you to distinguish a documented fact from a suggestion.
A simple method for choosing the gift
First define the intention: celebrating, thanking, accompanying or remembering. Next confirm a real preference and the delivery setting. Third, choose format and size for the available space. Finally set a total budget and which substitutions you would accept. This sequence is an editorial aid, not a formula guaranteeing the right choice.
For example, a birthday during an outing may suit later delivery at home; a thank-you gift for a small table may call for a compact bouquet; a tribute may require checking with the family first. The occasion guides the arrangements without requiring a particular species or colour.
Bouquet, plant or dried flowers: choose the format too
Ask whether the recipient wants to care for a plant or prefers a temporary gift. A bouquet needs water and a container; a pot needs conditions appropriate to its species. Dried flowers have different preservation needs and should not be treated as a fresh bouquet. We do not assume one format always lasts longer, takes less work or is more sustainable: that depends on the product and its use.
What to check in a home with cats
Identify the species in the arrangement and raise the issue before ordering. The FDA warns that Lilium and Hemerocallis are dangerous to cats, including pollen and vase water. Placing those flowers on a high shelf is insufficient. Avoiding them does not automatically make the rest of the bouquet safe: check its components with an appropriate veterinary source.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to wait for a special occasion?
No. Give flowers for a personal reason or without a formal celebration. A short note can explain the gesture without relying on a message that is supposedly implied.
Does every flower or colour have a universal meaning?
This guide uses no universal code. Cultural contexts and personal preferences vary. Where a documented custom exists, we identify its geographical scope and the source supporting it.
Do seasonal flowers have to be available locally?
We cannot guarantee that. Check which variety the florist can supply, its origin if that matters to you and proposed substitutions. A catalogue image is neither a sales offer nor a stock forecast.
What should I tell the florist when ordering?
Provide the occasion, preferences, total budget, approximate size, delivery place and date, container needs and acceptable substitutions. Mention any relevant destination restrictions before confirming the order.
Should I choose by a colour’s meaning?
You can if you share that association, but do not assume the recipient knows it. Explain your intention in a note and prioritise their preferences over a generic list of meanings.

How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
