Christmas in the UK: flowers for Christmas dinner

United Kingdom · Nationwide

In the UK Christmas is celebrated on 25 December. For Christmas dinner, bring a low arrangement if it is intended for the table or give a poinsettia for another part of the home. Plan delivery around the gathering and the delivery days offered by the florist.

Christmas dinner is the meal on Christmas Day

The main meal on the 25th is usually called Christmas dinner and is often eaten at midday. The name does not mean you should prepare the gift for the evening of the 24th. Use the day and time of your invitation to decide when to bring the flowers.

Christmas stays on 25 December even when there is a substitute bank holiday. In 2027 the 25th falls on Saturday and the Christmas Day bank holiday moves to Monday 27 December. That change in the day off does not move the celebration shown in our calendar.

Flowers for the table or a plant for the home

For a centrepiece to accompany the meal, we suggest carnations for their ruffled petals or lisianthus for their soft shapes. Allow for the space left between serving dishes and choose a low arrangement in a container. If you are bringing a gift for your hosts, a bouquet for a side table leaves the dining table free.

A poinsettia is another option for decorating the home. It is a potted plant rather than a bouquet to put in water. If the journey is cold, keep it protected and arrange an indoor handover. Include its care instructions.

Ordering so it is ready before the gathering

Write down the day of the meal separately from the delivery date. Do not assume delivery on the 25th or the same hours at every shop. Agree on an available earlier date and ask how to keep the flowers until you put them in place.

You could order: “This is for Christmas dinner on the 25th at my sister’s home. I would like a low carnation and lisianthus centrepiece that fits this space. I would like delivery on the 23rd or 24th if you offer it, and advice on caring for it until the meal.” Add measurements, the address and postcode. If ordering from another country, agree on a window in the destination’s local time.

For the card you could write: “Thank you for welcoming us into your home for another Christmas. These flowers are for the time we will share together.”

Frequently asked questions

Does Christmas dinner mean the meal on Christmas Eve?

In the UK it usually means the meal on Christmas Day, the 25th, often eaten at midday. The exact time depends on the gathering. Plan flowers around your invitation rather than how dinner translates into another language.

Which date should I give when ordering Christmas flowers from outside the UK?

Explain that they are needed for the gathering on the 25th and agree on an earlier delivery date with the florist at the destination. Add the address, postcode, recipient contact and a window in local time. The substitute bank holiday does not determine when the gift should arrive.

Sources and what they support

  • British Council · Christmas

Places Christmas Day on 25 December and describes Christmas dinner as the meal on the 25th, usually at lunchtime. British context, not a required time for every household. Reader comments are not used.

  • GOV.UK · UK bank holidays, 2026–2027

All three territorial tables list Christmas Day on 25 December 2026 and its substitute day on 27 December 2027. A substitute bank holiday does not move Christmas or extend the editorial occasion. No employment advice is given.

  • RHS · Christmas-flowering houseplants

Includes poinsettias among Christmas houseplants given as gifts and advises choosing for home conditions. Concerns potted plants, not cut stems or a required national custom.

  • RHS · How to grow poinsettias

Poinsettias are cold-sensitive; recommends wrapping for transport, avoiding draughts and suitable indoor conditions. Does not establish frost tolerance or guaranteed longevity.

  • British Florist Association · Buying flowers

Order details and delivery windows: date, address/postcode, preferences and card. The 23rd/24th dates and centrepiece are original examples subject to the agreed service, not national Christmas deadlines.
