Christmas in Mexico: a poinsettia or a dinner bouquet

Mexico · Nationwide

In Mexico Christmas is celebrated on 25 December and Christmas Eve dinner is on the 24th. Choose a poinsettia to keep at home or a bouquet of carnations or lisianthus for the table. Decide the format and write the day you need it in the order.

Nochebuena is also the name of a plant

The poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima, is called nochebuena in Mexico and used to decorate homes at Christmas. It is a potted plant, different from a cut-flower bouquet. Nochebuena also means Christmas Eve, 24 December.

If the gift is for dinner on the 24th, specify that date even though the calendar occasion is Christmas. To receive it before the final preparations, arrange a time window and a contact who can collect it.

A plant for the home or a table bouquet

For the plant, choose a spot with bright indirect light, away from heat and cold draughts. It can be part of the home decoration without taking up the dinner table.

For table flowers, we suggest carnations for their ruffled petals or lisianthus for soft shapes. A low bouquet with a container can leave room for serving. These are arrangement options for that gathering.

The growing pot and the decorative cover

The pot in which the poinsettia grows needs drainage holes. The decorative cover is the outer container: it needs to let you remove the growing pot and empty collected water.

Water when the surface of the growing medium is dry and let it drain before returning it to the cover. This keeps the base from sitting in water.

An order ready to take to dinner

You could ask: “I would like a poinsettia with a decorative cover that is easy to remove. It is a gift for the home and I will bring it on the 24th before dinner. I would like the ribbon on the outer container so we can take the pot out to water without undoing the gift.”

For a table bouquet, specify the space left between serving dishes and ask for it to arrive arranged in its container. Keep the delivery date, receiving contact and purpose separate in the order: home decoration or dinner arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 8 December also associated with nochebuena?

8 December is Mexico’s National Poinsettia Day, referring to the plant. Christmas Eve dinner is on the 24th and Christmas on the 25th.

Can I leave it in the decorative cover when watering?

Removing the pot lets it drain and lets you check that no water remains at the bottom. Then return it to the decorative container.

How should I protect it if the journey is cold?

Keep it wrapped for protection from cold and avoid waiting outside. Arrange collection close to when you can bring it indoors.

Sources and what they support

  • TURISSSTE · Celebra la Navidad

Places Christmas on 25 December and describes the family dinner on the 24th. Supports that distinction in Mexico, not an identical menu or celebration or delivery terms.

  • AGRICULTURA Estado de México · Flor de nochebuena

Identifies nochebuena as Euphorbia pulcherrima and describes its ornamental Christmas use at home. Prescribes no colour, required gift, availability or uniform growing conditions throughout Mexico.

  • Lotería Nacional · Navidad, 2024

The cultural text distinguishes every 24 December, Christmas Eve, from Christmas the following day. Used for that recurring rule without draw-related commercial data or public-holiday inferences.

  • NC State Extension · Euphorbia pulcherrima

Watering when the surface is dry, good drainage and protection from heat and cold draughts. No universal frequency.

  • RHS · Poinsettia

Bright indirect light, cold protection in transit and draining before returning to a decorative cover. Does not establish stock or uniform Mexican weather.
