When to give peonies
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
Peonies are our suggestion for Mother’s Day in Spain, anniversaries or birthdays for someone who enjoys full-looking flowers. Confirm variety, opening stage and supply for the day: not all have many petals, and May availability is not guaranteed. If unavailable, compare ranunculus or carnations according to the appearance you want to preserve.

Botanical reference: Paeonia
Peonies do not all look the same
Some have open flowers while others contain many layered petals, and colours also vary. Our illustration represents one particular appearance. If you want an especially full effect, describe that preference to the florist and ask about the available variety rather than choosing only by the flower’s name.
Have an alternative in mind
Garden peonies have a relatively brief flowering period. That does not provide an exact commercial availability calendar for Spain. Confirm supply for your chosen day before finalising the gift. If peonies are unavailable, you could keep a soft colour palette or choose carnations and other flowers the recipient likes.
Will peonies be available for the first Sunday in May?
Do not assume so. The RHS places herbaceous peony flowering in late spring to early summer in its growing context. That British reference is neither a Spanish harvest calendar nor a stock guarantee. Order for a specific date and town, confirm supply and agree a fallback.
Opening changes the display
For a dinner, wedding or photographed handover, explain when the bouquet needs to look its best. Ask about the opening stage of the available flowers and the vase space they will need. We do not promise every bud will open in time or recommend forcing them with household tricks.
Peonies, ranunculus or carnations: what to keep when switching
If peonies are unavailable, describe what you like about them: layered petals, gentle colours or a focal flower. Our suggestion is to compare ranunculus or carnations according to availability, without treating them as exact equivalents. Ask for a new description of bouquet size and price before accepting the substitution.
When we suggest it in Spain
Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.

How to choose flowers for a wedding
When choosing wedding flowers, first distinguish a bouquet carried by someone getting married, venue decoration and a gift for the couple. They serve different purposes. We suggest callas for simple lines, peonies for volume, baby’s breath for an airy appearance or cymbidium for flowers grouped along spikes. These design options should follow the couple’s preferences and budget.
Frequently asked questions
Are peonies the traditional Mother’s Day flower?
They are our cover flower, not a compulsory tradition. Spanish Mother’s Day falls on the first Sunday in May, while the choice of bouquet remains a personal decision.
Do all peonies have many petals?
No. There are single, semi-double and double forms. For a very full flower, ask for a double variety and confirm its actual appearance.
What should I choose if peonies are unavailable?
As an editorial alternative, compare ranunculus or carnations for shape and colour. Availability and the finished arrangement need confirming again.
Is a potted peony the same gift as a bouquet?
No. A pot involves caring for a plant and having a suitable place for it. For a gift ready to place in a vase, ask for cut flowers.
Sources and what they support
- Royal Horticultural Society · Paeonia
Peonies have bowl-shaped flowers, ranging from open forms to densely petalled blooms.
- Correos · Día de la Madre
Mother’s Day in Spain is celebrated on the first Sunday in May; this source supports the date, not the choice of peonies.
- RHS · Herbaceous and intersectional peonies
Single, semi-double and double forms, and flowering season in a British context; not evidence of commercial stock in Spain.
How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
