When to give craspedia

Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed

We suggest craspedia for a birthday or a thank-you when you want a clearly shaped yellow detail. A few stems can create a repeated pattern in a small container, or accompany other flowers. This is a visual suggestion, not a claim that yellow always means happiness or that everyone will prefer that colour for a gift.

Botanical reference: Pycnosorus globosus

A compact sphere with two names

The flower traded as Craspedia globosa appears in POWO under the accepted name Pycnosorus globosus. RHS describes its rounded yellow heads on upright stems and its use for fresh and dried arrangements. We retain craspedia as the familiar catalogue name. Compared with ornamental allium, it allows a repeated pattern of dots at a different scale and with another texture.

Choose between fresh and dried flowers

Specifically ask whether the product is fresh, dried or given a decorative treatment. These formats are different and need different instructions. For a dried gift, agree on the container, transport protection and preservation advice with the supplier. For a fresh bouquet with zinnias or gerberas, explain which colour should dominate and what role each flower should play.

When we suggest it in Spain

Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.

Frequently asked questions

Is every colour of craspedia natural?

Do not infer that from a photograph or a commercial name. This guide illustrates yellow; if another finish is offered, ask whether it has been dyed or painted. Clarify the treatment when combining it with other flowers too.

Sources and what they support

How we put these guides together

We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
