Palm Sunday in Lithuania: choosing a craft verba

Lithuania · Nationwide

Lithuania observes Verbų sekmadienis on the Sunday before Easter. If you want a handmade verba ask about its materials and who made it. The dried composition associated with Vilnius and green branches take different forms. If you prefer to give dried statice you can choose it as a personal gift without presenting it as a traditional verba.

Colour and shape vary between cultivars. Use it as a visual reference rather than to identify a plant.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar

Apple or Google decide when to check for updates. We cannot guarantee that changes appear immediately. Importing the file gives you a copy that does not receive our future corrections. Importing again may duplicate events. We do not add alarms, although your calendar may apply its own alerts.

A date that moves with Easter

The Ethnic Culture Council places Verbų sekmadienis on the last Sunday before Easter. The Visaginas municipal greeting of 29 March 2026 provides a cross-check for that year. Our calendar follows Gregorian Easter rather than repeating 29 March each year.

To attend a blessing or workshop check the venue’s programme. This occasion does not set a service time, admission to an activity or fair dates.

Green branches and Vilnius verbos

The Lithuanian National Culture Centre’s inventory distinguishes small arrangements of green branches from Vilnius verbos made with dried flowers and other plants. It describes both Palm Sunday blessing and decorative use. The Vilnius craft form has a regional context within a wider observance.

A piece may combine natural or dyed materials. If you want this craft ask who made it and which plants it contains. A photograph of dried flowers or a bouquet tied with ribbon is not enough to identify the tradition. We do not treat plants’ common names as botanical identification.

What to ask before choosing a craft piece

Decide whether the recipient wants it for a religious celebration or to display at home. Ask about its finished height and width and how it stands. You can then choose a piece that fits the intended space without taking it apart.

You could ask the maker: “I am looking for a verba as a gift. Did you make it? I would like to know which materials it contains and whether they are dyed. What are its dimensions and how should I transport and care for it?” Ask for a photo of the available piece and confirm the packaging before collection.

If you prefer a dried-flower gift

Our alternative is a small dried-statice arrangement for someone who would like to receive it. The RHS includes statice among flowers suitable for air drying. This page’s photo shows that flower as a reference, not a Vilnius verba. This personal gift does not replace a craft piece or a composition specified by a parish.

For dried displays the RHS advises avoiding direct sunlight and damp locations. If you buy a piece with other materials follow its maker’s instructions too. Do not assume that a dried composition needs fresh-bouquet care. Our guide to formats explains how to distinguish them.

Which flowers to choose

We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.

Frequently asked questions

Is a verba the same as a Žolinė bouquet?

Do not interchange their names or preparation. Verbų sekmadienis falls before Easter; Žolinė is on 15 August and its page explains a different plant-blessing context. Confirm the composition with the actual venue if you plan to take part.

Do I have to take a Vilnius piece to church?

Ask the parish what you may bring and when. The sources describe green branches and a different regional craft; we do not present a particular piece as a requirement for everyone. A decorative gift for home may have another use.

Sources and what they support

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
