When to give an African violet
Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed
We suggest an African violet for thanks, retirement or a new home when a small plant is wanted and the recipient enjoys caring for one. This is a potted gift, not our suggestion for cut flowers in a bouquet.

Botanical reference: Streptocarpus ionanthus
Before choosing an African violet
It can suit a small space with an appropriate growing position. Ask the nursery about mature size and placement; deliver the pot upright with a label and instructions. Check the compost before deciding whether it needs water.
Why it is also called Saintpaulia
RHS lists Streptocarpus ionanthus and its synonym Saintpaulia ionantha. The plant forms a rosette of leaves with small flowers above it. When a seller uses the older name, check identification so that you compare the same plant.
Our purple illustration is a reference, not a guarantee of colour or cultivar. Request a picture of the available plant when the shade matters to the gift.
Choose its position before giving it
RHS recommends indirect light and consistent warmth. Rather than assuming any corner will work, ask where the pot would live and discuss that position with the seller.
For a shared desk, agree on who will look after it. For a personal gift, a note explaining your thanks is clearer than assigning a universal meaning of fidelity or modesty to the flower.
What to ask about the actual plant
Request plant and pot dimensions, the number of open flowers and care advice the recipient can follow. An attractive outer pot should still allow the growing container to be removed.
If sending by courier, arrange for someone to receive it instead of leaving it waiting. Transport needs depend on the journey and expected weather.
First care without a rigid timetable
RHS advises careful watering without wetting the foliage; use room-temperature water. Check the compost and allow excess water to drain according to nursery guidance. Frequency depends on conditions rather than a fixed weekday.
When we suggest it in Spain
Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.
Frequently asked questions
Are Saintpaulia and African violet the same plant?
Saintpaulia is the older name still used by sellers. We use Streptocarpus ionanthus here, as listed by RHS.
Can it suit someone with little space?
Its size can make it an option, but confirm dimensions and placement. Limited space does not automatically provide suitable light.
Can I give it as a bouquet?
Our suggestion is a potted plant. For a bouquet, discuss other cut flowers and explain the colour you want.
How many times a week should it be watered?
There is no universal frequency. Check the compost and follow instructions suited to the particular pot and environment.

How we put these guides together
We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
