Flowers for Our Lady of Candelaria in Tenerife

Agenda Floral · Editorial selection · Reviewed

Tenerife · Island

Our Lady of Candelaria’s February feast falls on the 2nd. This guide focuses on Tenerife, although she is patron of the Canary Islands. Carnations, freesias and lisianthus are our editorial suggestions for a personal gesture or an event accepting that format; they are not flowers required by the celebration.

February has its own programme

The City Council distinguishes the February feast from the one on 15 August. Within the February 2024 festivities it announced a flower offering by the musical ensemble from Arafo on the 4th. This confirms a floral connection, but does not place every offering on the 2nd or transfer summer activities to this date.

From a name day to a visit

If someone named Candelaria celebrates her name day, ask which colours and fragrances she enjoys. A bouquet delivered at home has different practical requirements from flowers carried to the basilica. For the latter, ask whether individual contributions are accepted and agree on the time and format before ordering.

Three possibilities to discuss with a florist

Carnations offer a compact texture and lisianthus a lighter appearance. Freesia may suit someone who enjoys fragrance; leave it out if that scent does not suit the person or location. Adjust the quantity to the container and transport, without assigning a compulsory religious meaning to each number.

Which flowers to choose

Flower pairings are suggestions from Agenda Floral. Documented customs are explained separately; no occasion requires one particular flower.

How we put these guides together

We check dates and customs against institutional sources, and botanical information against horticultural sources. Gift suggestions consider a flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. Commercial references document an offer, not popularity or a tradition. This initial catalogue is a growing editorial selection, not a list of every species.
