Pontevedra’s Festa dos Maios: when to visit and how to take part

Pontevedra’s Festa dos Maios takes place on 1 May in Praza da Ferraría. For a visit check that year’s programme to see the maios and hear the cantigas. To take part start with the rules and registration. Before donating flowers to a group agree what it needs. A gift bouquet is different from material for its display.

1 May identifies the festival, the programme helps plan your visit

Pontevedra Tourism places the competition on 1 May each year in Praza da Ferraría, also known as Plaza de la Herrería. The 2026 announcement set the start at 11am with the Benvida ao maio. That time belongs to that edition. Check the programme for the year you want to attend before finalising travel plans.

For a short visit choose part of the programme that lets you see the displays and hear the cantigas without rushing. If you are bringing children plan somewhere to take a break as well. Do not infer the event’s duration from its start time or use this programme for a festival in another town.

What you will see besides flowers

A maio is a decorated structure. For Pontevedra’s 2026 competition the council described a cone between 1.5 and 2 metres high. Categories include traditional maio, cantigas, performance and coroa. The group’s work combines the display with verses and how they are sung.

The Museum of Pontevedra explains the historical relationship between the maio, crown and verses. Use that context to recognise what you are seeing. Its old descriptions do not replace the current competition conditions or provide instructions for obtaining materials. This guide covers Pontevedra’s festival. Ourense’s celebrations and Corpus Christi flower carpets need their own programmes.

For flower carpets on the streets consult the Ponteareas Corpus Christi guide. It helps you choose between watching overnight creation and seeing the finished pieces before the procession. This is a different visit rather than a category in the Maios competition.

For Ourense’s Maios consult its visit and participation guide. There the festival follows the first Sunday in May. You can see plant figures and hear verses with a separate programme. Do not carry over Pontevedra’s date, materials or registration.

Entering takes more than a finished display

The 2026 BOPPO extract admitted individuals, associations, organisations and groups that met the requirements and registered. Applications closed on 30 April 2026. If entering as a group check representation and documentation requirements before starting. That deadline does not reserve a place for another year.

Separate responsibilities early: who submits the application, who prepares the maio and who coordinates the cantigas. Read the full rules and ask the organisers about anything unclear. The council news summarises materials and categories but does not explain every requirement. If you are just watching do not treat competition registration as a step needed for your visit.

Choosing materials without inventing an assembly recipe

The 2026 council news mentions fennel, pampillos, margaridas, oranges, eggs and flowers such as calas and camelias among the traditional materials. Keep these local names when asking the team. A common flower name does not identify a species by itself or confirm that every catalogue variety is accepted.

Ask the group for a specific list and discuss substitutions before buying. You could suggest cultivated flowers and agree their source. Do not turn the traditional list into an invitation to gather wild plants. For an activity at home explain that it is a display inspired by the festival rather than a piece that already meets the competition rules.

Helping without bringing a bouquet nobody expects

Before ordering ask the group whether it needs flowers, other materials or help with a task. You could say: “I would like to help with your maio. Which materials are missing and who can receive them? I would also like to agree an alternative if I cannot find what you ask for.” This gives the contribution a purpose and a recipient.

Once agreed confirm the amount, how the material should be prepared and the delivery time. If transporting it ask for protection suited to the piece and explain the journey to the florist. The group’s registration does not establish an open bouquet reception in the square.

If someone hosts you at home after the festival you can prepare a separate gift to suit their taste. You do not need to copy the maio’s flowers to thank them. August’s Peregrina celebrations are another Pontevedra occasion and their page distinguishes the feast from the offering.

Frequently asked questions

When is Pontevedra’s Festa dos Maios?

On 1 May in Praza da Ferraría. Check the edition’s programme for the time. The 11am start is documented for 2026 and is not automatically carried forward to the next year.

Do I need to register to see the maios?

The registration consulted is for entering the competition. For a visit check the programme and event conditions. Do not use the competition form as if it were a visitor reservation.

Which flowers are used in a Pontevedra maio?

The 2026 council news names pampillos, margaridas, calas and camelias alongside other traditional materials. Check the rules and ask the team before choosing species, quantities or substitutions. This is not a universal recipe.

Can I bring flowers to help without arranging it?

The sources do not establish unrestricted bouquet reception. First agree with a group what it needs and when it can receive it. You could help with a task if no floral material is needed.

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
