May Day baskets in the US: flowers and gifts for May 1

A May Day basket is a small basket of flowers or treats given on May 1 as a gesture of friendship. To make one I would choose a short bouquet of alstroemeria with a water container inside the basket. That makes the gift ready to put down at home.

A small basket for May 1

May Day baskets are one of the different ways of marking the date in the United States. The custom includes leaving small gifts of flowers or treats on friends’ doorsteps. It is not practiced in the same way across the country.

You can use the idea for a small gift for a friend or relative. Keeping it small and making it with that person in mind gives it its appeal. Add a card with your name and a few words of your own so they know who it is from.

Put a water container inside the basket

If you use a basket place a small clean vase inside that sits steadily. The flowers stand in water in that container and the basket forms the wrapping. Carry the arrangement by its base so the decorative handle does not have to bear the weight.

A paper basket can present the gift but cannot hold water. If you make one as a craft use a light bouquet and move it to a vase when you hand it over. You could also decorate a small box with paper to hold the container during the journey.

If you add treats keep them in their packaging and separate from the water and damp stems. You can give them alongside the basket rather than fitting them between the flowers.

Choosing and ordering the flowers

We suggest alstroemeria in a short bouquet so its clusters of flowers sit above the edge. Carnations are another option if you want their petal shape to stand out. Choose one or two colors that the recipient likes.

An order could be “I would like a small May Day basket with alstroemeria in soft colors. Please include a water container so I can carry it by hand.” If you already have a basket bring its measurements or a photo. For locally grown flowers ask what is available that week near the delivery address.

Plan the handover around the flowers

Although the custom includes leaving the basket on a doorstep I would hand it over in person if you do not know when someone will be home. That keeps the bouquet from spending hours outdoors and lets you explain how to take the vase out to change the water. Indoors keep it in a cool spot away from heat sources.

Your card could say “You came to mind while I was making this basket. I hope it brightens the start of May.” If you are meeting after the first you can take it on that visit and keep the gift idea without leaving the flowers waiting.

Annapolis: baskets on doors and storefronts

In Annapolis, Maryland, doors and storefronts are decorated with fresh flowers on May 1. These baskets are made for display. You can walk through the historic center to see them. The next announced celebration is Saturday, May 1, 2027.

Decorating and entering the competition are different things. The 2026 competition area covered the Historic District and parts of Murray Hill. If you want to enter check that year’s competition map and rules before ordering flowers.

For a door I would choose a front-facing arrangement and a support suited to its weight. Take the florist a photo of the spot and its measurements. For a café window you could request flowers in a large cup with a separate water container inside. The design then reflects the business and you can remove the container to change the water.
