Flowers for Las Nieves on La Palma: which event to choose
To bring flowers to Las Nieves on La Palma first choose the event and agree on handover with the sanctuary or organisers. The 5 August feast, the five-yearly Bajada and Fiesta de las Madres have separate programmes. A flower offering is documented at the latter in 2011, but that report does not confirm how to participate today. For an agreed contribution I would ask for a manageable bouquet or the format the recipient needs.

The annual feast and the Bajada have different calendars
La Palma’s patronal feast is on 5 August. The 2026 diocesan report describes Mass and a procession by the sanctuary. The Bajada is a celebration scheduled every five years with several events. This does not mean the image descends to the town every August or that the whole programme takes place in one day.
In the 2025 programme the throne’s parts descended on 29 June. The image’s descent was on 12 July and its return to the Real Santuario on 5 August. These details help identify the separate journeys in that edition. Before booking a trip check the relevant programme and the event’s location. Agaete’s La Rama takes place on Gran Canaria and has different organisers.
If you mean Guadalupe on La Gomera consult its separate guide. Its Bajada travels by sea and the Gomeran Ramo uses fruit and flowers prepared locally. The Las Nieves programme on La Palma cannot be used to arrange that contribution.
Look for a specific offering announcement
The Diocese of Tenerife reported a floral, poetic and folk offering at Fiesta de las Madres on 29 May 2011. This sanctuary celebration honours the Virgin and mothers. It is separate from August’s patronal feast. To attend that tribute ask for the current announcement rather than placing it on Spain’s national Mother’s Day yourself.
A report mentioning an “offering” does not always describe handing over flowers. The account of 5 August 2026 records institutional addresses without instructions for accepting private bouquets. Ask whether a floral contribution is planned and how it works. If you simply want to visit the sanctuary you can plan your visit without ordering a bouquet.
Flowers on a float serve a different purpose
The Batalla de Flores in the 2025 programme was a float parade scheduled for 11 July. Its description mentions paper or natural flowers. This decorative use differs from a bouquet offered to the Virgin. The event’s name does not mean you need to bring flowers to watch it.
To help with a float contact the group preparing it first. Ask what material is needed and when to deliver it before buying flowers. A finished bouquet may not suit their construction. Do not infer a species, quantity or attachment method from the festival’s name.
Prepare flowers once handover has been agreed
For a bouquet you will carry by hand I would tell the florist how long it will be with you and whether you will be walking. I would ask for cultivated flowers with gathered stems and protection that is easy to remove. If the contribution is for a sanctuary arrangement ask whether loose stems would be preferred. Choose the format for that use and the recipient’s instructions.
For example, if several relatives want to contribute one bouquet you could ask: “We would like to contribute flowers. What format would help you and who should we arrange the day and handover with?” You can then order and plan transport around the reply. For direct delivery confirm who will receive it before booking. The sanctuary’s contact page provides a way to start that conversation and the transport guide helps with an order already agreed.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Bajada of Las Nieves happen every year?
No. The sanctuary describes a celebration held every five years. The patronal feast on 5 August is annual. Check the Bajada programme for the dates of each journey and event.
Are Fiesta de las Madres and 5 August the same tribute?
They are separate celebrations. The 2011 report places Fiesta de las Madres in May and documents a flower offering. That historical evidence does not set the next date or confirm bouquet reception today.
Is a particular flower or colour required?
The consulted sources give no current species or colour instructions for private bouquets. Agree on the contribution first. For a hand-held bouquet ask for cultivated flowers suited to the recipient’s instructions.
Do I need to bring flowers to Batalla de Flores?
The 2025 programme describes it as a parade of floats with paper or natural flowers. It does not announce a public bouquet handover. To contribute material ask the group preparing the float.
Sources and what they support
- ODISUR · Diócesis de Tenerife, fiesta de las Nieves 2026
Places the feast of La Palma’s patron on 5 August each year and describes the 2026 Mass, procession and institutional offerings. Does not announce unrestricted acceptance of private bouquets.
- Real Santuario de las Nieves · La Bajada

- Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de La Palma · Programa de la Bajada 2025 en Lectura Fácil
The 2025 programme separates the throne’s descent on 29 June, Batalla de Flores on 11 July and the image’s descent on the 12th. Describes floats with paper or natural flowers, not a bouquet handover.
- Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de La Palma · Regreso al santuario en 2025
The notice dated 3 August 2025 announces the image’s return on 5 August from El Salvador to the Real Santuario. Separates the throne’s return on the 2nd. Does not set another edition’s programme.
- Comunicación del Obispado de Tenerife · Fiesta de las Madres 2011
The report dated 29 May 2011 documents a floral, poetic and folk offering at the sanctuary’s Fiesta de las Madres. This is evidence for that edition, without current bouquet-reception conditions.
- Real Santuario de las Nieves · Contacto
Provides a contact channel for the Real Santuario and places it in Santa Cruz de La Palma. Contact details do not authorise flower deliveries or confirm reception times.
How we put these guides together
We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
