Flowers for Guadalupe on La Gomera: offering and Bajada

Before buying flowers for Guadalupe on La Gomera choose the event and ask its organisers how you can contribute. The Puntallana feast and the maritime Bajada have different calendars. The Gomeran Ramo is an offering of fruit and flowers that is also different from a florist’s bouquet. For an agreed contribution I would order the format the person preparing it needs and confirm the handover location first.

The Puntallana feast is not an annual Bajada

The municipality places the Guadalupe feast in Puntallana on the Monday after the first Saturday of October. The 2026 programme announced Mass and procession on 5 October. This is the reference for finding the annual feast beside the hermitage. It does not mean private bouquets are accepted that day.

The five-yearly Bajada travels by sea from Puntallana to San Sebastián. The image then visits parishes on the island. In 2023 it arrived in the capital on 9 October. To choose your visit date find the specific journey or event in that edition’s programme. Las Nieves on La Palma has its own Bajada and different organisers.

The Gomeran Ramo differs from a gift bouquet

The Biosphere Reserve describes the Ramo as an offering made with fruit and flowers in communities such as Arure, Taguluche and Valle Gran Rey. It is prepared for each place’s devotion. This tradition explains why ordering a gift bouquet is not enough to contribute to a Ramo. Nor are all those communities’ feasts events for Guadalupe.

One specific example is linked to Guadalupe: the island council credited Asociación del Ramo de Arure with making the offering at the island gathering of older people on 9 December 2023. The report does not say anyone could add flowers or describe its composition. To help ask the group responsible what it needs. Their reply will help you decide whether buying flowers makes sense.

Agree on the format before ordering flowers

For a hand-carried bouquet I would tell the florist how long it will be with you and whether you will be walking. I would ask for a manageable size with gathered stems and protection that is easy to remove. To contribute to an offering prepared by a group ask whether loose stems or other material are needed. Choose cultivated flowers for the agreed purpose and the recipient’s instructions.

For example, if several relatives want to contribute you could ask: “We would like to help with flowers. What do you need and who should we arrange the day and handover with?” The reply lets you prepare a useful order rather than bring a bouquet that does not fit. If you simply want to attend you can plan your visit without buying flowers. The consulted sources specify no mandatory flower or colour for private bouquets.

Check the journey and who will receive the order

Transport may need arranging before the feast day too. For Puntallana in 2026 the municipality offered free transport and required seat requests by 1 October, before the celebration on the 5th. This is an example from that edition. Check the relevant programme before relying on the same service or booking a journey.

In the 2023 Bajada the return planned for 16 December was postponed due to sea conditions. The diocesan report records that it took place on 26 December after another postponement on the 22nd. I would therefore confirm the location and the person receiving flowers with organisers before scheduling a delivery around a journey. For an order already agreed consult the transport guide. The image’s route does not confirm that you can sail with it.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Guadalupe feast in Puntallana?

The municipal calendar places it on the Monday after the first Saturday of October. The 2026 programme announced Mass and procession on 5 October. Check that edition’s announcement for times and transport.

Does the Bajada of Guadalupe happen every year?

No. It is held every five years and has a programme of different events and journeys. The annual Puntallana feast should not be used as the date of a maritime Bajada.

Can I replace the Gomeran Ramo with a florist’s bouquet?

The Ramo is an offering of fruit and flowers prepared locally. A gift bouquet is different. To help ask the group responsible what material it needs before ordering flowers.

Can I send flowers straight to the hermitage?

Agree on handover with the event organisers or Cofradía first and confirm who receives them, where and when. The hermitage’s location or a report about an offering does not authorise an unannounced delivery.

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
