Agaete’s La Rama and Las Nieves procession: when to go and what to bring

To see La Rama in Agaete choose 4 August. The Virgin of Las Nieves pilgrimage procession takes place on the 5th and is a separate event. Branches are part of the celebration on the 4th. Your visit need not involve buying flowers. Check the local programme to choose a time and ask the organisers if you want to participate with plant material.

Two different days within Agaete’s festivities

Turespaña places La Rama on 4 August each year and the pilgrimage procession the following day. The route with branches reaches the Virgin’s shrine. The procession then takes the image from its hermitage to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This guide concerns Agaete in Gran Canaria, not every Las Nieves festival in the Canary Islands.

Start by choosing the event you want to see. If you can only come for one morning do not combine both as stages of the same day. For example, to see the route with branches look for Bajada de la Rama on the 4th. To follow the pilgrimage procession check the events on the 5th. La Orotava’s Corpus Christi carpets have a different location and calendar.

Diana, Bajada and Retreta have separate starts

The council’s programme for 4 August 2026 announced Diana at 5am outside the town hall. Bajada de la Rama was scheduled for 10am beside the church of La Concepción and Retreta for 10pm at that same point. These are separate events. That timetable does not mean one activity lasts from morning until night.

On the 5th in 2026 Mass was scheduled for 10:30am followed by the procession towards the parish church. That is the time of Mass, not an exact departure for the pilgrimage procession. Use the 2026 programme to understand the sequence and check your edition’s programme before travelling. The annual date alone does not confirm 2027 timings.

Ceremonial branches and a gift bouquet serve different purposes

The tourism description records carrying branches and a religious offering at the end of the route. It does not describe unrestricted acceptance of any florist’s bouquet. You can plan a visit without bringing flowers. To join in with branches ask how participation works and where to obtain the material used in that edition.

You could ask: “I would like to participate in La Rama. How is the material obtained and what instructions should I follow?” Do not choose a species or cut branches from the surroundings based on a description of the festival. If you want to offer flowers at the shrine first confirm whether they are accepted, in what form and when. The transport guide helps with an agreed contribution, not as instructions for preparing ceremonial branches.

Plan your return journey from Agaete too

The council recommended public transport in its notice of 31 July 2025 because parking would be very limited. This is a reference for that edition. Do not treat its reinforced bus lines or taxi stop as confirmed arrangements for your trip. Check current council and operator notices before choosing a connection.

I would arrange the return before leaving and keep the confirmed pickup point or stop handy. To stay for Retreta check a way home after that event. If someone with you needs rest ask about suitable access and places for the day you choose. A start time alone tells you neither how long your visit will last nor whether the whole route suits your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Are La Rama and the Las Nieves procession on the same day?

No. In Agaete La Rama takes place on 4 August and the pilgrimage procession follows the next day. Choose the event you want to see and check its time in the local programme.

Do I need a bouquet to visit La Rama?

You can plan your visit without buying a bouquet. The festival uses branches and open acceptance of gift bouquets has not been established. Ask the organisers before contributing material.

Can I collect branches myself?

Do not interpret the tradition as permission to cut material from the surroundings. Ask how material is obtained for that edition and follow the organisers’ instructions.

Can I use previous editions’ schedules and transport arrangements?

They help explain the organisation but do not confirm your trip. The council timings cited are from 2026 and the transport notice is from 2025. Check details for the edition you will visit.

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
