Teachers’ Day in Lithuania: flowers and thanks on 5 October
Lithuania · Nationwide
Lithuania celebrates Teachers’ Day on 5 October. To thank a teacher, you could add a flower or a small bouquet to a personal card when the school allows it. We suggest carnations for their ruffled petals, but the recipient’s tastes matter more than a particular species. Before ordering, ask whether the class is planning a shared gift and when to give it.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar
Apple or Google decide when to check for updates. We cannot guarantee that changes appear immediately. Importing the file gives you a copy that does not receive our future corrections. Importing again may duplicate events. We do not add alarms, although your calendar may apply its own alerts.
5 October and the start of school are different dates
UNESCO places World Teachers’ Day on every 5 October. Lithuania’s education ministry documents observance in the country through its 2026 awards. The date recognises teachers and does not set the time of a visit or handover. Mokslo ir žinių diena on 1 September marks the start of the school year and has its own page.
To take part in an activity, check the school’s announcement. To contact someone who taught you years ago, use the school’s channel and ask how to send your message. You do not need to arrive during a lesson to express appreciation for what you learned.
Thanks for one person or a team
Šiaulių universitetinė gimnazija reports pupils welcoming teachers with flowers and words of thanks on 5 October. This is one school’s example. It does not identify species or mean that every family should bring flowers or every school accepts any gift.
If several families want to take part, ask whether the class has already planned something. Be clear about whether the gift is for one person or the team. For several recipients, you could collect individual messages in a shared card without adding a bouquet per pupil. Let each family choose whether to join in.
Carnations for a gift they can take home
Carnations’ ruffled petals, described by NC State, are the reason for our suggestion. Ask for a colour the recipient likes and an easy-to-display size. This is not an official Teachers’ Day flower, and these sources do not guarantee availability at a Lithuanian florist for your date.
Before buying, confirm whether flowers are accepted and who can receive them. If the teacher will take them home on public transport, a small bouquet may be easier than a large container. For a shared room, ask where they would like them and who can care for them. If a material gift does not suit, give just the message.
A specific card and an agreed handover
Think of something that genuinely helped you. A former pupil could write “Thank you for encouraging me to ask when I did not understand. It still helps me learn.” Adapt the idea to your experience rather than claiming a story you have not lived. Sign with your name and school year so they know who is writing.
To ask about a handover, you could say “We would like to thank our form teacher with a card from the class. If flowers are accepted, would a small bouquet at the end of the day suit? Who could receive it?” Confirm the arrangement before placing the order. A calendar subscription records the all-day observance, not the delivery appointment.
Which flowers to choose
We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.
Frequently asked questions
Does each pupil need to give a flower?
It is not a requirement of the occasion. Check what the school accepts and whether the class is arranging something shared. A card with personal messages may be enough. There is no need to compete over bouquet size or require every family to take part.
Is the carnation the traditional flower for Mokytojų diena?
We suggest it for its appearance, not as a documented national tradition. The Šiauliai school’s account mentions flowers without identifying species. Choose another flower the teacher enjoys and agree a substitute with the florist if you prefer.
Will the school celebration always be on 5 October?
5 October is the annual observance date. Check your school’s programme for its activities and the handover time. Adding the occasion to a calendar does not confirm a visit, ceremony or permission to bring gifts.
Sources and what they support
- UNESCO · World Teachers’ Day
Sets World Teachers’ Day on every 5 October. Does not determine individual schools’ programmes or a gift flower.
- ŠMSM · Tarptautinė mokytojų diena, 2026
The ministerial post of 5 October 2026 records awards to Lithuanian teachers for the international day. Confirms observance in Lithuania, not permission for private gifts.
- Šiaulių universitetinė gimnazija · Su Mokytojų diena!
The school reports pupils welcoming teachers with flowers and words of thanks on 5 October. Does not identify species or establish the same practice or gift acceptance at all schools.
- NC State Extension · Dianthus caryophyllus
Describes ruffled petals and use as a cut flower. Carnations are an editorial suggestion, not an official species or confirmed Lithuanian availability.
How we put these guides together
We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
