Flowers for Totensonntag in Germany: date and tribute
Germany · Nationwide
Before taking flowers for Totensonntag check the family’s wishes and the rules for the grave. You could ask about a small bouquet of chrysanthemums or carnations if cut flowers are allowed. In 2026 this Protestant commemoration falls on 22 November. It is observed on the Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent rather than a fixed day of the month.

Guide to adding Agenda Floral to Apple and Google Calendar
Apple or Google decide when to check for updates. We cannot guarantee that changes appear immediately. Importing the file gives you a copy that does not receive our future corrections. Importing again may duplicate events. We do not add alarms, although your calendar may apply its own alerts.
When it falls and what it remembers
Totensonntag is also known as Ewigkeitssonntag. The EKHN places it at the end of the Protestant church year and the EKD calendar gives 22 November for 2026. The date does not tell you when a religious service will take place in your town. Check the congregation’s programme if you wish to attend.
It is distinct from All Saints’ Day on 1 November and All Souls’ Day on 2 November in the Catholic calendar. It is also different from offering condolences after a recent loss. For a grave visit agree with the family when they want to go and whether they would welcome flowers.
Where the flowers will go changes the order
Ask whether you may leave flowers at that grave and where they should go. Do not assume a shared area or a grave without its own space allows a bouquet. Cemetery staff can explain the permitted spot and any conditions on containers or removal.
For cut flowers check whether there will be a suitable container and who can look after them later. If there will not be one explain that to the florist before choosing an arrangement. A prepared arrangement does not guarantee permission to leave it anywhere.
Ohlsdorf: why checking materials matters
Ohlsdorf follows the rules for Hamburg’s state cemeteries published by Hamburger Friedhöfe. The grave decoration section prohibits using bouquets and wreaths containing plastic components and plastic arrangement holders on graves. It also includes artificial plastic flowers.
For Ohlsdorf ask the florist to check the materials throughout the arrangement. Removing wrapping does not resolve the issue if its support contains plastic. For a different cemetery check its own conditions. Hamburg’s rule does not apply across Germany.
Chrysanthemums, carnations or a flower that recalls the person
We suggest comparing chrysanthemums and carnations by their appearance and the format the florist can prepare. You could also ask about callas for an arrangement with simple lines. These are editorial suggestions rather than required Totensonntag flowers.
If you know a flower the person enjoyed you can start there. Agree on an alternative if it is unavailable for the visit. Colour or size need not express the whole memory on their own.
What to ask when ordering from another town
Give the cemetery name and grave details confirmed by the recipient or cemetery staff. Agree whether someone will receive the flowers or whether the supplier can place them with permission. Check the delivery day and time without assuming they match a religious service.
For Ohlsdorf you could ask “I would like a small carnation bouquet for a Totensonntag visit. The grave allows cut flowers in its container. I need the arrangement to meet the rules on plastic. What can you prepare and when can I collect it?”. Use this example only after checking the location and adapt the flower and date to your visit.
Taking a bouquet or accompanying someone without flowers
Plan the journey after collecting the flowers and ask how to carry them to the visit. For delivery from afar agree what happens if the supplier cannot complete the placement. Do not authorise leaving the bouquet elsewhere without knowing the conditions.
Respect the family’s wish to go without flowers. You can accompany them or remember the person together without adding a gift. For a recent loss the sympathy flowers guide covers reception and a message for that different moment.
Which flowers to choose
We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.

Chrysanthemum
Main flower in our selectionYou could ask for a small chrysanthemum bouquet if the family wants to take flowers and the grave allows cut flowers. Check the container and permitted materials before ordering.

Carnation
Carnations are another suggestion for their appearance if they suit the memory and permitted format. Agree on an alternative with the florist if they cannot prepare them for the visit.

Calla lily
You could ask about callas for simple lines if the arrangement fits the authorised spot. They are not a required flower for this commemoration.
Frequently asked questions
When is Totensonntag in 2026?
The EKD liturgical calendar places it on Sunday 22 November 2026. Its rule is the Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent. For another year consult its liturgical calendar and the local programme.
Is it the same as All Saints’ Day?
No. Totensonntag is a Protestant commemoration in late November. All Saints’ Day is on 1 November and All Souls’ Day on 2 November in the Catholic calendar.
Must I take chrysanthemums?
The sources in this guide do not prescribe a flower. Chrysanthemums, carnations and callas are suggestions you can adapt to the family’s wishes and the venue’s conditions.
Is removing plastic wrapping enough at Ohlsdorf?
Check the support and other components too. The published rule includes bouquets and wreaths containing plastic components and plastic holders on graves. Check the entire arrangement with the florist.
Can a florist leave flowers at any grave?
Do not assume so. Confirm permission for placement and give the location details. A shared area may have different conditions from an individual grave.
Is it included in the Agenda Floral subscription?
Yes. You can subscribe to Germany’s calendar from the website to include this date. If you already have that subscription, the addition will appear when your calendar app next checks it.
Does it also appear in the Agenda Floral app?
Totensonntag requires the next Agenda Floral update. Your installed version may continue showing the previous calendar until that update is available in your app store. The calendar subscription from the website works separately.
Sources and what they support
- EKHN · Ewigkeitssonntag y año litúrgico
Places the Protestant commemoration on the Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent. Its 2025 report does not establish service times in other years or a required flower.
- EKD · Calendario litúrgico 2025–2026
Page 36 places Ewigkeitssonntag and Totensonntag on 22 November 2026. It establishes that year’s liturgical date, not a visit programme or delivery time.
- Hamburger Friedhöfe · Normas de los cementerios estatales
The operator publishes a ban on grave decorations, bouquets and wreaths containing plastic components in Hamburg’s state cemeteries, including Ohlsdorf. This is not a rule for all Germany or confirmation of where a particular grave allows flowers.
- EKD · Conmemoraciones de noviembre
Distinguishes All Saints’ Day on 1 November and All Souls’ Day on 2 November from Protestant remembrance in late November. It does not determine a family’s wishes or a cemetery’s rules.
- EKHN · Primer Adviento
Defines the first Sunday of Advent as the fourth Sunday before 25 December. Together with the Totensonntag rule this gives its Sunday between 20 and 26 November. This is a calendar derivation rather than a local programme.
How we put these guides together
We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
