Flowers for a Holy Week brotherhood: how to contribute

Before buying flowers for a brotherhood, ask how it wants to receive your contribution. It may invite offerings during a procession or ask for help paying for arrangements. These are different ways to contribute. If flowers are needed for a display, agree the material and handover with the team preparing it. You can attend the procession following its programme without bringing a bouquet.

Colour and shape vary between cultivars. Use it as a visual reference rather than to identify a plant.

An offering and a donation need different preparation

In Los Santos de Maimona, the 2026 programme invited members and worshippers to offer carnations along the Cautivo route on Holy Tuesday, 31 March. The invitation applies to that event and edition. It does not establish a compulsory colour or the same reception the following year.

Salutación in Málaga offers contributions towards the cost of the floats’ floral arrangements in its 2026 yearbook. It directs readers to member access/events or the treasury. This is a financial contribution rather than an invitation to arrive with a bouquet.

These examples help you read an announcement. If it asks for help funding flowers, confirm the contribution channel on the brotherhood’s website. If it invites you to bring flowers, ask how to hand them over. Do not replace a request for money with purchased flowers without agreement.

Choose the format after speaking to the receiving team

For flowers intended for a float, ask which species and colour the display team needs. Confirm the quantity and whether it expects loose stems or a prepared arrangement. Exorno means the float’s decoration. A gift bouquet tied with a ribbon may not suit that task.

Carnations appear in the Los Santos de Maimona invitation. We do not suggest that every brotherhood requires them. A photograph of a finished float does not tell you which material is missing or whether private contributions are accepted. The carnation page lets you see the flower’s shape once the choice is confirmed.

Agree the handover before completing the order

Confirm the day and who will receive the flowers. For a display contribution, ask how far ahead of the procession the team needs them. The procession time alone is not a delivery time. For an offering along the route, ask where and how to hand it over without interrupting the procession.

For florist delivery, provide the agreed location and authorised contact. If you will carry the flowers yourself, describe the journey and waits too. Ask for protection you can remove as instructed. Do not add a vase or a support of your own when the flowers will become part of another arrangement.

A family order with a clear destination

Imagine your family wants to help decorate a float. One person could first ask: “We would like to contribute flowers for the display. Which material do you need and who receives it? What is the delivery deadline?” Then pass the answer to the florist without adding species or colours chosen only for personal taste.

If the brotherhood prefers a donation, you can use the channel it confirms without also ordering a bouquet. If no handover is available, you can attend without flowers. For a patronal offering outside Holy Week, consult its own guide. The Soledad in Badajoz has September announcements that should not be used as instructions for a spring procession.

Which flowers to choose

We suggest flowers that may suit each occasion. Where a custom is documented, we explain it separately. For a personal gift you can choose another flower if you know the recipient will like it more.

Frequently asked questions

Which flowers should I bring to a Holy Week brotherhood?

Choose those requested in the announcement or by the display team. Ask about species, colour and format before buying. If no flowers are requested, you can use another confirmed contribution channel or attend without them.

Can I send a bouquet straight to the church?

First agree who will receive it and where. The church address and departure time do not establish an order reception service.

Does a donation for flowers mean I should buy a bouquet?

No. It may mean a financial contribution so the brotherhood can prepare its arrangements. Check the official channel and do not substitute a different contribution without asking.

Is there an annual date for all these handovers?

Each brotherhood and event has its own announcement. Check the relevant programme. This guide does not add a national date or subscription for flower handovers.

Sources and what they support

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
