White palm in Elche: choosing and carrying it on Palm Sunday

To carry a white palm on Palm Sunday in Elche, start with its size and how you will reach the route. A small piece is easier with children or several stages of travel. For a woven palm, compare its width and the space it takes up inside its packaging too. Choose one you can carry without bending it or squeezing the decoration.

Plain or woven palm: what you are choosing

White palm is obtained by keeping light away from new leaves as they grow. Its pale colour comes from that process. A plain palm has a simpler form. Worked pieces have leaves woven into decorations.

Look at the whole piece before choosing. A tall, narrow palm may need less width than a shorter one with more decoration. Photographs give an idea but handmade pieces can vary. Ask for the measurements of the palm you will receive rather than just the model name.

Choose the size for the whole journey

Think about who will carry it and where it will stay until you leave. For a child I would choose a piece they can hold by the base without you having to keep lifting it. If you travel by car, also check the space it needs with its protection in place.

You could ask: “I am looking for a palm for my daughter and we will arrive by car. I need its packaged dimensions and advice on placing it without squeezing the decorations.” This is an example to help specify your choice. A large palm can be striking but is not better if you have to bend it for transport.

Collection, packaging and storage before Palm Sunday

Agree collection and care instructions with the person preparing the piece. Some woven palms come with instructions to keep them in their packaging in a cool place out of light. Keep the instructions for your purchase because finishes and decorations can differ.

Before loading it, clear a space without bags or objects pressing on the work. Keep the protection prepared for the journey and avoid holding the palm by its decorations. To look at it before leaving, open only what you can replace without compressing it. The flower transport guide helps with collection and space, but bouquet water care does not transfer to this craft.

The palm, market and procession need separate planning

Elche celebrates Palm Sunday with its palm procession and a market linked to the tradition. Plan the collection point separately from the starting point of the event you will attend. Each edition’s programme lets you check the blessing, route and road closures. A sales point is not necessarily the procession’s starting point.

The national Holy Week entry shows each year’s dates and lets you add the period to your calendar. This guide focuses on Elche and preparing the palm. To contribute flowers to a float, see the brotherhood guide: a palm carried on Palm Sunday and flowers for the display are different orders.

Frequently asked questions

Is white palm a dried flower?

It is a palm leaf obtained through a process that keeps light away as it grows. It can be plain or worked. It is different from a dried flower bouquet and should not automatically receive its care.

Can I choose from the photo alone?

The photo helps you choose a style. To work out whether you can carry it, ask for the piece’s measurements and those of its packaging. Handmade work can vary from the image.

Does the market always open on the same days and at the same times?

Check the announcement for the edition you will visit. Last year’s opening times and stalls do not confirm those for your journey. If you have placed an order, you can arrange collection directly.
