Candlemas in Tlacotalpan: river procession and visiting
To see the flower-decorated boats in Tlacotalpan, look for the river procession of the Virgin of Candelaria in the programme for your edition. In 2026 it took place on 2 February. The festivities and cultural events spanned more days, so they did not all offer the same experience.
The procession for seeing flowers on the river
In the 2026 river procession, flower-decorated boats travelled along the Papaloapan River. The celebration takes place in Tlacotalpan, in the Mexican state of Veracruz.
To plan a visit around those decorations, find the procession in the programme and check where spectators can watch it. An activity advertised at a cultural centre does not imply access to the boats.
The festivities and cultural events have different dates
The general 2026 programme announced activities from 30 January to 9 February. Its main days were 31 January, 1 and 2 February. Those dates describe that edition and do not fix the duration of later ones.
The 2026 Foro Cultural del Sotavento was scheduled from 31 January to 2 February at Casa de Cultura Agustín Lara and Centro Cultural del Sotavento. It included music, book presentations and workshops. If that interests you, choose an activity and its venue rather than using the procession timetable.
Choosing when you only have one day
If you are travelling for the flower-decorated boats, start with the procession day and viewing location. Then add a cultural activity that fits your time. If you prefer music or workshops, plan around their venues without making the visit depend on the river route.
For example, you could ask: “We can only visit for one day and want to see the boats with flowers. What day will the procession take place and where can spectators watch it? Is there a cultural activity nearby afterwards?” Use the answer to choose a date before booking your trip.
Seeing the decorations or contributing flowers
The boats’ floral decoration is part of preparing the procession. If you want to contribute material, contact the team preparing it and agree on what it needs and how it will receive it before buying. A finished gift bouquet may not suit that work.
If you are staying with family or friends, arrange a gift for them separately. The dinner-host flower guide helps you choose a gift for their home. The seasonal guide for Mexico helps you specify origin and format when ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the procession on any day of the festivities?
The procession has its own date within the programme. In 2026 it took place on 2 February, while the general schedule covered more days. For another edition, locate that specific event before choosing your visiting day.
