Memorial Day in the US: date and flowers for a tribute

United States · Nationwide

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May in the United States and remembers those who died during military service. When bringing flowers, start with the tribute’s location. Cut carnations or chrysanthemums are options in a format accepted by that cemetery. Visiting a grave and taking part in a ceremony have different conditions.

What Memorial Day remembers

The observance remembers those who died during military service, not only in combat. Veterans Day is November 11 and honors those who served, with particular attention to living veterans.

Choosing flowers and placing the order

For a personal tribute, we suggest cut carnations. If you prefer a fuller arrangement, compare a chrysanthemum design. Decide the size and container after checking where it will be placed.

You could ask: “I would like to bring flowers to a grave for Memorial Day. The cemetery accepts this kind of container and this is the space available. Could you prepare carnations to place there and protect them for the journey?” For delivery, provide the cemetery name, grave location and a contact who will receive the flowers.

Arlington: cut flowers and temporary containers

Arlington National Cemetery accepts cut flowers year-round and provides temporary cones. Do not bring a glass vase or a permanent container. Planting flowers or attaching objects to headstones or niches is not allowed either.

Artificial flowers are allowed there only from October 10 to April 15, so they do not suit a Memorial Day visit in May. For another cemetery, check its own policy. Flowers may be removed when deteriorated or for maintenance, so do not plan around a fixed display period.

Visiting a grave or attending a ceremony

For a visit to a specific grave, prepare flowers under that location’s conditions. To lay a wreath at a public ceremony, also check participation and receipt of the arrangement before ordering it. Being a spectator does not reserve a role in the ceremony.

At Arlington, distinguish Flowers of Remembrance from the national Memorial Day observance. Each programme has its own date and conditions. Before buying flowers for an event, check whether organisers provide them and who may place them. The national calendar date remains the last Monday in May.

Frequently asked questions

Do Memorial Day poppies have to be fresh flowers?

The poppy is used as a remembrance symbol and may be represented in an item worn on clothing. That use does not require a bouquet of fresh poppies. For flowers to place at a grave, choose according to the cemetery’s policy.

Can I place flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on my own?

Do not assume a visit allows you to place flowers there. Arlington has specific programmes with participation conditions. Check the announcement for the event you want to attend; the Memorial Day ceremony and Flowers of Remembrance do not offer the same access.
