Virgen de la Concha in Zamora: flowers, offering and pilgrimage

If you want to bring flowers to the Virgen de la Concha in Zamora choose the event first. The feast is on 8 September and the La Hiniesta pilgrimage takes place on Whit Monday. September’s offering has its own announcement. Check the programme and ask whether flowers, food or both are received before preparing your contribution.

The feast and offering may be on different days

The brotherhood’s calendar distinguishes the September feast from the pilgrimage. For the local offering find the programme for your chosen edition. In 2026 the council announced flowers and local produce on 6 September at noon in Plaza Mayor. The Concha Mass was scheduled for the 8th at 20:00 in San Vicente. Attending that Mass is not the same as arriving for contributions in the square.

In 2024 the municipal announcement placed the offering on the 8th. That difference shows why you should not save the feast as each year’s delivery date. The programme date helps you choose the event. To participate also confirm the reception point and whether you need to register or attend with a group.

Ask which contribution is needed before buying

The municipal announcement for 2026 listed flowers and local produce. These are different contributions; the programme does not detail accepted products or reception arrangements. If you want to support the charitable part ask what is needed and who will receive your donation. Do not replace a request for food with a bouquet simply because the event is called an offering.

You could write: “Our family is attending the Concha offering and would like to contribute. Are flowers, food or both received? What should we prepare and where do we hand it over?” This lets you bring something useful. For a confirmed bouquet agree on size and presentation. If products are requested follow that request without assuming you must also buy flowers.

The La Hiniesta pilgrimage follows another route

The pilgrimage takes the Virgen de la Concha from Zamora to La Hiniesta on Whit Monday. In a 2014 explanation the brotherhood describes bouquets that devotees offered to decorate the carrying platform. The diocesan report from 2023 records flowers being distributed on return. The platform is the structure used to carry the image. These accounts explain a floral use within the pilgrimage, not a general gift distribution.

If you want to contribute during the journey ask the brotherhood when and how to hand it over. Do not place flowers on the platform yourself or interrupt its passage. September’s place and time do not apply to this pilgrimage. For a visit without a floral contribution simply follow the attendance announcement and plan your route.

Carnations in a carpet do not dictate your bouquet

The municipal 2024 report describes a carpet made with red and white carnations for the patron saint’s passage through Plaza Mayor. It is work prepared by floral carpet makers. It does not require participants to bring those flowers or colours. Nor does a photograph of the platform confirm a required species for another edition.

Once the organisers confirm they accept bouquets give their instructions to the florist. Explain whether you will walk with the flowers or arrange direct delivery. The transport guide helps with that journey. For another local offering consult the Soledad guide for Badajoz and check its own announcement rather than copying this plan.

If you are planning a visit to the Virgen del Camino in León consult its flowers and offering guide. There the documented bouquet is presented by the council during Mass. That institutional participation differs from the Concha announcement, so agree on any private contribution with the sanctuary.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Concha offering always on 8 September?

Do not assume so. That is the feast day, but the municipal programmes consulted place the offering on different days in different editions. Find the announcement for the year you will attend.

When is the La Hiniesta pilgrimage?

On Whit Monday. It is a movable date and a pilgrimage distinct from September’s events. Check its programme for times and participation conditions.

Must I bring both flowers and food?

Do not assume every participant must bring both. Ask which contributions are received at your chosen event and prepare the one that has been confirmed.

Must the flowers be red and white carnations?

Those colours are documented in the 2024 carpet. They are not an established requirement for participants’ bouquets. Confirm any current instructions with the organisers.

Sources and what they support

How we put these guides together

We consult institutional sources to check dates and customs. For plant facts, we use horticultural sources. Our gift ideas start with each flower’s appearance and the recipient’s taste. A shop link documents a particular offer. It does not prove that a flower is popular or part of a tradition. We keep adding to this selection rather than claiming to cover every species.
