Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day: dates and wreaths

To prepare a Remembrance tribute in the UK, start with the event you want to join. Then choose an accepted format and agree who will receive and present the wreath. A poppy worn on clothing, a commemorative wreath and a personal bouquet serve different purposes.

Two dates to distinguish

Armistice Day is 11 November and is marked with a two-minute silence at 11am. Remembrance Sunday is the second Sunday in November.

In 2026, Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November. In 2027, it will be 14 November. Armistice Day remains 11 November in both years. For attendance, also check the local event programme.

A symbolic poppy and a commemorative wreath

The red poppy is the symbol of Remembrance. There are paper poppies and other crafted representations, including those gathered into wreaths. This symbolic use does not mean ordering fresh poppies from a florist.

If you represent a group, agree the format with the event organisers before buying. Settle size, badge and message. If you want to bring other flowers, check how they fit that event; a commemorative wreath and a sympathy bouquet are not interchangeable.

Attending and presenting a wreath are different

For the Cenotaph service on 8 November 2026, spectators may watch from the designated public areas, subject to capacity and checks. Watching does not entitle you to march or lay a wreath.

The March Past requires registration and accreditation for eligible participants. Participating associations hand their wreaths to staff who lay them. Check the conditions for the particular edition before arranging participation; do not apply this procedure to every local event.

An order for a local tribute

You could ask: “Our group would like to present a wreath at your tribute. Which formats do you accept, and who should we arrange its receipt and presentation with?” You can then choose the order and prepare a message with the group’s name.

Allow time to receive the wreath before the event and check the message. Availability and delivery depend on the supplier. The delivery guide helps coordinate the order without confusing arrival with the time of the tribute.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a wreath for someone else to present?

Agree with the organisers who will represent the group and how they will receive the wreath. If sending it directly, give the accepted location and contact. Buying a wreath does not reserve participation in the event.
