Kräuterbuschen in Bavaria: what to bring on 15 August

Bavaria · Regional

For the Mariä Himmelfahrt blessing in Bavaria, prepare a Kräuterbuschen, a bouquet combining herbs and flowers. Yarrow can be one component and a rose can add a floral accent. The feast is on 15 August. Before preparing yours, check whether your parish offers a workshop or ready-made bouquets.

Colour and shape vary between cultivars. Use it as a visual reference rather than to identify a plant.

The celebration and where this date applies

Mariä Himmelfahrt is the Assumption of Mary, celebrated on 15 August. Catholic communities in Bavaria bring herb bouquets for a blessing. This entry covers that regional custom rather than a shared timetable for every church.

It is separate from Christi Himmelfahrt, Ascension Day, which shares its date with German Father’s Day. Nor does it mean 15 August is a public holiday throughout Bavaria. That status depends on the municipality.

What can go into a Kräuterbuschen

The bouquet brings together different plants and may include ears of grain. Yarrow is one of the materials used, and a rose can be added among the herbs. Compositions vary with local and family customs.

The image on this page shows ornamental yarrow rather than a complete ceremonial bouquet. Use cultivated plants you can identify or order materials from a supplier who names them. If you attend a workshop, follow its proposal rather than trying to copy a plant list from another town.

Your own bouquet, a workshop or parish collection

Start with your parish programme. Look for whether the activity involves making bouquets together, collecting a ready-made one or bringing your own to the service. This tells you whether you need to buy materials and when they should be ready.

For your own bouquet I would choose a size you can hold comfortably in one hand. Leave a grip area on the stems and protect the bouquet on the journey without crushing it between bags. The transport guide can help you plan that trip.

A message to organise the preparation

You could write: “I would like to bring a Kräuterbuschen on 15 August. Are you running a workshop or preparing bouquets for collection? If I bring my own, are there any guidelines on size and arrival time?” That is more useful than ordering a large arrangement before knowing the activity’s format.

The calendar records the full religious day. Check each year’s programme for workshops, bookings and blessing times. If you are visiting Lithuania, use the Žolinė entry for its own tradition on 15 August.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need exactly seven plants?

Some compositions use seven plants and others use more. Follow the local custom or workshop proposal. There is no single recipe to copy for every Bavarian parish.

Can a rose bouquet serve as a Kräuterbuschen?

A rose can be part of the composition, but a bouquet made only of roses is a different format from an herb bouquet. When ordering, explain that you want a Kräuterbuschen for the blessing.

Does the subscription include my church’s service time?

It includes 15 August as an all-day occasion within Bavaria. Consult your parish programme for service times, workshops and bouquet collection.
